I'm thinking about updating cameras from my little Canon Power Shot SD400 to something better.  I know a few of you have some decent 35mm cameras and I just wanted to here what everyone would recommend.

Question of the now, would you want another point and shoot or a higher up DSLR?

If you like Cannon - and why not - the ES line of SLR's are a good body, but the kit lenses are pretty ordinary.  A decent lens will cost more than the whole kit....

For Point N Fails the SX10 would be worth checking out, ive got a S5 and it takes decent shots most of the time.
For SLR's the Rebel XSi is a good choice, you might be able to trade Dillon a rock or any other object that holds paper to a table for his.

I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel XTi at the moment, which I think is a pretty good DSLR to start with if you're gonna be heading in that direction. Lot of flexibility, not much to go wrong.  The XSi is the new version of the XTi and XT, but it probably isn't that that much different from the older cameras and if you were looking to save money the XTi and XT would be the way to go.

These are pretty nice SLR's to start off with, and then once you get more used to them you can move up to stuff like the 40D, 30D, etc, or higher quality cameras from other manufacturers also.  And a random list i made up for a friend of mine that was deciding whether to stick with point and shoots or move to SLRs:

Quick ability to turn on in case I'm in a pinch to take a picture.
Quick ability to take shots for same reason, and that you can take multiple shots.
Ability to set camera to take a number shots a second, and then go back, pick out the best, and delete the bad ones..but other cameras can probably do this too
Being able to change lenses depending on the subject matter.
Ability to have an additional to have an extra flash.
Being able to shoot in full manual rather than present automatic modes
Being able to set how long the shutter is open when you are taking shots.
Like all other cameras, being able to change ISO and White Balance easier than a PNS.
I'm not sure if PNS's can be equipped...but having a separate shutter release is pretty nice too

I have shot with both the Rebel, and my D40, and while the Rebel is just as versitile as the D40, maybe a bit more, I find the D40 to be a bit more comfortable in my hands. Oh, and it is about half the cost of the Rebel last time that I checked.

The Canon Powershot / S series is a good batch, for both on-the-go pictures and 640x480 movies.  I used to use an S3 while my dad used an S2, now I've moved up to a Rebel XT and dad uses the S3.  I love the Rebel because 1. It's a DSLR for starters... 2. It's very quick to the shot, burst gets a fair bit when used, and 3. The interface is easy to navigate

Now if you want a challenge, try multitasking and try and get some nice pics while shooting video. Since I focus more on video, I just use a Point and shoot. But I use a Powershot G9, a great camera for my needs, it makes almost no noise so it's good when I'm shooting video. For video, I use a Sony HDR-FX7, and that's perfect for almost everything I've done, except low light video.

I just got the Canon Rebel XS with a couple lenses.  What a step-up for me, I am upgrading from the S3 IS.  I love this new canon, Ryan is right, quick to load, and easy to navigate.  However on the downside, I will be spending a few thousand on lenses, in fact my next lens is almost $2500.

Thanks for the input guys.  I'm no stranger to complicated cameras.  I use to have a Pantex 35mm.  Can't remember the model but it cost $285.00 back in 1981 and was 2nd to the best they made at the time.  (I didn't like the features of their best)  It died about 10 years ago a few years after my brother and I drowned his jeep in a river. Cheesy  I've also used my wife's Canon AE-1.  Sure miss my Pantex though.  Keep the suggestions coming.  Now that I actually have 4 days in a row off I can get serious about checking some cameras out.

Yeah I would be checking all the deals after Christmas, both in stores and online.  The only reason we got our new one was because it was a great deal and came with a lens.  Best of luck, and let us know when you find something.

Mike

Oh and Merry Christmas Bill to you and yours!

In case anyone is curious I've ordered my new camera.

All the reviews I read were really good and from the sounds of it it sounds comparable to my old Pentax in regards to the picture taking capabilities.  Now the tough part.  The wait.

I went with an Olympus E3 with 14-54 and 50-200 2.8/3.5 not to long ago. It was a toss up between that and a Pentax K7.

Those new Pentax's are great. The cool thing is the ability to mount older manual K mount lenses on them without an adapter. There are tons of excellent older lenses out there dirt cheap.

The main reason I went Olympus was the weather sealing and with the 2X crop factor I'm good from 28-400mm. That and I picked the kit up refurbished for about what it would cost for a 70-200L IS for my 40D. Probably going to sell my 40D and 24-105L here soon.

Good choice and you should like it.
