Title: What did you do today?
Post by: KiwiRail on October 05, 2009, 09:24:47 AM
If you ever find yourself working on something to do with your model railroad, take some pics & post em' here! Doesn't matter how small, just something to show your still making progress & hopefully encourage all the rest of us to do the same.

As for me? well today i laid some cork roadbed in preparation for my next order of track.

How about former projects? My parents made me dismantle it 2 weeks ago and used the wood for shelving in our shed.  :'(

No pictures, but today I managed to split a switch and put 4 out of 9 cars on the ground. Or plywood, in this case. No surprise that they were CSX.

Welp, it's Spring Break, so naturally, Campus looks like something out of Life After People (especially in the Greek part of town  ).  Since I had a day to kill before my trip, I figured I'd go attempt stuff at the layout:

Oh whoops I just glanced at the cab and didn't notice it was a wide cab (I shouldn't post this early in the morning :kablamo:).

Not on my widescreen right now so I only saw a corner of the cab in the shot and I thought you were trying to model one of the units BNSF just sold off to CN.

My bad, :facepalm1:

Amazing work on taht one, the weathering looks great!  For the battered up top part of the car did you bend down the sides or did you melt them down a bit?  Either way the effect worked and it looks stunning!

Here' what i did today.

I installed a snow plow on to my G gauge 4-6-0.  I need to find a way to increase the weight of the thing cuss it's so light that i can just see it hitting 1cn of snow come to a complete halt and not go anywhere.
Title: Re: What did you do today?
Post by: CNRAIL on January 04, 2011, 06:47:54 PM
That's pretty cool Dylan, im sure it won't stop in the snow now. You could add some weight to it by adding some small weights were they are not visible but being creative is a pretty smart idea.

Depending on how much room is in the boiler, you could put some lead shot in there.

I seem to make do with parts that i find in my parts bin or the random ass shit i find in a box at a train show. Here are two of my older kit bashes with things that were compleaty useless ( The U30C was patched to BNSF because stupid me  :knowitall: thought they lasted that long and became my fictional railroad.) and the snowplow came from the plans of a CNW plow that used a gondola and a plow.

and 3 of my 4 D&H Geeps
(http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk105/MATPS294/cp100707_7.jpg)

7610 needs a total rebuild since it has NO detail what so ever but hey its a GP39-2. The 7312 is for the last year of my era 1990 so it will get bitch lights and some new detail parts.Oh one of those 3 will get tsunami

Quickly threw down the final part of my mainline today as i had a friend coming over that wanted to run some stuff in - didn't have the time to sand down the roadbed  properly so i will probably have most of it up again to do it right lol (it's pretty bumpy).

Nice layout William ! Its coming along nice.

A Link to last weeks project at TRRM.In all it took me 3 days to detail the car.The hardest part was making the steps but over all it came out nicely. It is in the paint shop and is staying CHTT

Ok even though I didn't do it today, it was that day when I did it. So my today is actually several days ago. Yeah I'm behind abit. Well I got a bug up my butt to take a Walther's Coal Mine and Kitbash it, and turn it in to a N-Scale Locomotive Repair Shop. Keep in mind that this started life as an HO scale structure, but has been rather beat up the years.
First pic is the front the building, minus the complete tracks, and CSX name.
Here we have the rear of building ( I guess you figured that out) (yeah I'm the king of DUH!!! statements)
Right side testing clearence height, yeah it needs to come up a tad
(http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af175/saxrt1/IM001428.jpg?t=1299043010)
Lastly, I need to get off my duff and get the layouts cleaned off.

It was actually a C32-8 imported by OMI  which is the 12 cyl cousin of the C39-8.Only 10 C32-8s were built for Conrail.A bunch show up on ebay all the time now for a real decent price. They don't run very well but I'm sure NWSL makes parts to make it a prize runner.I just didn't want to put more work into mine.I over payed for it and in its place now have a nice OMI B23-7 FP for NS

Now, I'm off to play Wolfenstien. Clean my room, and probably do some model stuff. If not, I'll take pictures just to post something else later, and share what I have on the model railroad spectrum.

OH thanks for reminding me that I have a gear to fix on BL2. Just kidding. That BL2 looks sweet. Really though, I do have gear to fix on mine. Bought it new and the gear on the on drive axle was split at that time. I just didn't have the heart to take it back. That's was back in 1995 and it only has maybe 30 minutes run time on it.

Yet for some reason over the last several years I have seemed to lost inspiration. I still love my models but right now I just don't have what it takes to do anything with them. Anyone got some ideas here. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I trashed my layout yesterday, whats left of it is still in the garage the rest may rest in pieces.  So in my situation the layout room didn't get worse, but way better!

Uh this may be a bump or not. Right now I'm so tired I really don't know. Anyway, when it comes to 3D trainz route creation(not the cheap ones) is my specialty. Now in the real world I can build anything needed. So when on my N scale I needed to the mainline from board to another and had the locomotive service shop in the way, I faced a big program. Either move the structure and it's trucks (that's not going to happen) or bridge the line. So,  knowing the I was going to be running heavy trains over line, out came the  I beam, channels, tweezers, reading glasses, spare hair,Plastruct glue, regular glue, sheet plastic and one very large cup of coffee. Long story even longer, I scratch built a bridge that now swing around the back of the locomotive service facility on the layout. The bridge is rated to handle HO Scale brass( Yes I tried it). Sure I may have over built it, but then again I like it. Also this one bridge (named Andrews Bridge after my late son)had just opened alot of idea. Did I have I fun oh yeah. Oh at the end I goofed. I laid out a curve that is too sharp for my Dash9 and SD80Mac. But now I'll have the layout going all the way around the train room. Hmmmmm -- I still win.
Here's a few pics.
Template used to make the bridge

and now this curve is to sharp. So the N scale is going to circle the room

SAXT Goes Heavy Lift.
With the addition of two Heavy Lift cranes and a Schnabel Car, SAXT will be moving into the heavy lift market. Now no matter deep your firm wants to pile their crap, SAXT has the means to move that crap where it needs to go. Even if it's a boat load of crap, we can move it. Extra shipping charges do apply for for stinky crap, runny crap or the slimy green crap that makes you wonder " OK What did I eat to make that crap".

After getting both cranes in, I have set about the long task of building one of them. The first crane in the erecting hall is the LIEBHERR LG 1800 SPACE LIFTER seen with the truck complete. Next is the wheel house and then the lattice boom, then everything else.

For model railroading related stuff, i've got none at the moment. I'm eventually going to start building my 4 X 8 N scale layout set in the Cascade Range in Washington state. Just need to get the extra track for the plan :shitfan:

@ Enginewhistle, if I had the extra track I would be more than happy to send it to you. I would love see the layout take shape when you start.
@ Kon, the O-27 layout looks real good. I would love to more of it if you don't mind.

Not that this has to do with model railroading (although I am loving mine), but I missed the Crescent, which happened to have 156 Phase I Heritage leading the entire 40th Anniversary Exhibit Train and its consist behind it... Missing that is bad. Missing it twice, like I did, makes me want to vomit.

So I finished one project being a good size HO scale crane. Then I decided to do some more work on the N Scale CSX / SAXT shared assets layout. On the layout CSX Owns the track and SAXT had trackage rights. So the bulk of equipment will belong to CSX Transportation.   In the following pictures, I still have to install the roadbed.  I am happy to report that there is no lag or reduction in frame rates. Also I don't have to pull 100 feet or better away from switches to line them. All track joints are soldered even though at this time I'm still on test leaders. Please don't suggest that I go to DCC. Also don't ask to beta test the layout. Yes that has happened already. The final e-mail wasn't pretty. On a much better note you'll notice that repair shop has grown. I hope you enjoy. Next step. Installing track power and blocks. Then some ballast. And no one will be able to guess what I'm going to use. Which reminds me, I'm going to get back to the beach soon. I hope you enjoy.

The official SAXT (Daddy are you making that for me) Track inspector. Yes my daughter likes trains. And Nascar.

Looks like your spline point isn't attached on that last switchout in the upper left going into the heavy repair shop.  :D  I think your inspector wants to beta test it for you too.

This makes me wish I had room to make a layout.  I have tons of HO scale stuff but nowhere to make a layout.

Bill, that's my problem. I have tons of HO scale equipment but no place for a decent layout. Some of my equipment dates back to the 1920's. All the tracks (splines) are connected. Once I get track power installed I pull out my my other locomotive and do a group shot. My scenery is choice is going to blow your mind. It's all natural and free minus gas.

@CR6441 Those C&O cars are looking way to sweet.  Excellent job.

Well I now have the layout on dedicated track power. I'm running things old school meaning no DCC. I have each shop stall on a it's own circuit. By the time I called it a night I was too tired to take pics. Hopefully with in the next day or so I'll get the intermodal yard in.

I spent all night working on the N scale layout. I didn't get any of the new structures built. But I did get the intermodal track installed and the two industrial tracks. Plus to make my self feel better I plopped down some scenery. My scenery blend is a mix of naturally crushed seashells, Woodland Scenics ground turf, and lichen.Well that and some old train cars. I hope you like these.
