Title: Blawnmaster2000 County: A Veritable Paradise [PA Shortline Group]
Post by: KnifeSwitch on April 24, 2013, 06:28:01 PM
Howdy all -

Here's a project that will never be completed in any reasonable amount of time, but this is a fictional group of shortlines that all have pointless interchanges with one another and pingpong cars back and forth from larger Class 1s and others.  As of right now, this group features 4 railroads - Bridgeport Aberdeen & Southern [BASR], Breadwood McCentral [BWED], Maxon-Dixon Rail Link [MDRL] (EDIT* 5/3/13 - changed to Cumberland & Potomac CPRY), and whatever Alex decides to call his route today; last month before he vanished it was the Luzerne & Susquehanna [LNS], (EDIT* 5/11/13 now the Mayburry Northern [MBRY]).  Each of these have some sort of stupid interchange with one another at some point, as well as a number of Class 1s that feed us the majority of our cars; as of right now I think the major one of these is Conrail, but these guys can chime in if there's others.

EDIT: Nikos also was sucked into this vortex, now we have the Sunburry Southern [SBSR?] looped in as well.

Time period is ~1996, right before the ditchlight requirement, and the routes bridge across Pennsylvania.
This will ultimately be a dumping ground for random screenshots, renders, maps, timetables, whatever stupid stuff I/we come up for for the 'project'.   :headspin:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a few BASR shots & info to kick off the thread, enjoy guys:

As it stands, the Bridgeport Aberdeen & Southern roster is comprised of 2 MP15AC's, 1 SD45, and 2 leased HLCX GP38-2s, all active.  There is also one dead & unrebuilt MP15AC parts unit, as well as an assortment of random MoW equipment including a few cabooses, tool cars, flats, etc.  This is a new railroad that was only formed within the last few months, and this is the power present at startup.

Early morning at the Aberdeen shop shows the local crew prepping their power for the day, in the form of MP15AC 552 and HLCX GP38-2 340, for the run to Bridgeport to switch NorPenn Beer Distributors, Dunder-Mifflin Paper, the team track, Rasmussen Concrete on the mainline, and finally Wookie Gas in Nashua before grabbing the interchange cars from the Breadwood up in Roxbury.

;D Them McNuggets be looking good, and thanks Mick, that sandtower fits right in here.

Been making some good progress tonight - from a few months ago, here we see an early MoW extra with the 550 on point drifts downgrade towards the L&NS interchange in East Aberdeen on a dreary winter day.

Today the RS-7 has a long cut of interchange cars from the LNS - pulled by the railroad's twin active 1500s 550/552, they're seen here with the throttle in the corner, screaming up the hill towards Aberdeen Yard.

Thanks Andre - I have to say that modelling in the winter can yield some sweet results, definitely a big fan of this style now.  O0

This view is looking towards RX Tower with the LNS/CR interchange yard at left, and old mainline (now access to Rasmussen Cement) at the right, with Conrail on the bridge upstairs.  The guard shack & gates are the main entrance into the cement place.  Had a really productive night last night!

And for giggles I borrowed 3/4 of the McNuggets to try their hand at pulling the interchange drag up the hill; with 12 axles total on the rails, these babies did surprisingly well!
Here they are cruising downgrade to the interchange.

After leasing a pair of GP38-2s from HLCX for the last few months, when the lease was up the BASR ended up purchasing the units entirely.  The former UP/HLCX 340 was the first to be shopped, renumbered to #568 and repainted in the Aberdeen shops last week.  Here the 568 is on its first test run west with the 552 and un-repainted & un-renumbered sister 343 in the lashup of today's RS59.

The new addition to the paint scheme was the white band separating the black & blue... El Presidente likes the look and as the rest of the fleet is cycled through the shop this will be added.

Before being abolished and the duties transferred over to the new RS-6/7, here is the RS-54 with newly reactivated MP15AC 553 on point & a leaser SW1500 drilling the variety of customers in the Bridgeport vicinity.  These industries are now covered by the RS-6 (east-end job) which also switches the MDRL/LNS interchanges, as well as a few other duties in the local Aberdeen area.

The Aberdeen shop guys completed the 550's 92 day this morning after she'd been out for the majority of the week - here she is being load tested on the shop pad after the white band was added.  552, 553, and 670 are next - no plans to paint or number the 343 as of yet.

Everybody loves McNuggets  ;D
Thanks for the support guys.. makes it way more fun to post and it's good to pump some life back into this forum!

Friday (today) marked the first day that the BASR brought cars to the Cumberland & Potomac interchange - a handful of buffs went out and caught the RS6 crew with the CPRY cars in tow at a few locations along the main.  The trainmaster & CMO signed off on having the two newly white-trimmed engines in charge of the train today, 550 picked to be in the lead after her paint touch up.

Here we see the RS6 throttling up underneath the Delaware Ave. bridge in Aberdeen with CPRY cars in tow.

Further along at MP 5.8, the train is seen at track speed nearing Bridgeport.

Finally, we see the train with the throttle in the corner as the 21 car train of loads screams thru Bridgeport.

Thanks gents, and looking good Nikos.. 6 axle alcos =

Rough day for the 552 today.  Shop guys were swamped with 3 units OOS on Monday morning, and as such the heavy RS58 for that day was only able to pull the 550, 552, and 568.  Here they are shown at Bridgeport after running around the consist to head up the main towards the BWED:

The 4900 ton train proved to be too much for the combined 5K hp that the three units put out up on the 1.9% grade, and not too far past MP 21 the 552 started to overheat pretty badly, ultimately cooking one of the traction motors on the hill.  Long day for the crew as they returned back to Bridgeport to double the hill and run all the way out to the BWED with half the train.  A second crew was called in after the first had outlawed, and they didn't make it back to Aberdeen until 11 pm, 16 hours after the report time in the morning.  The 552 went right to the shop where she'll probably be spending a significant amount of time.

Ugh, I so need to start actually getting stuff to a point where I can post screenshots. They are coming very soon. I am just moving extremely slowly on the route building end of things and you guys are making me jealous of your progress. Oh well, I should have a bunch more time soon now that I am graduating. (At least until I find a job that is)

I just want to thank everyone who is enjoying this thread. When this project was first started I had no idea that it would get the kind of response that it has been getting so thanks for the support and I hope that you guys continue to enjoy the great screens that are posted. (As well as the 1 screen a year that I will probably be able to post judging by my slow pace.  :P)

Sunbury Southern has picked a few beater GP35's off the NS deadline, they be repainted as time allows.
Here we found two at the Sunbury yard ready to take a train of frozen McStuff to the McCentral interchange in McWherever.

Love it Nikos, can't wait to see those bad boys repainted. Here's a teaser of the new revamp of Aberdeen Yard, I like it much better like this.. much muuuch more enjoyable to switch in.

Picture taken by the engineer of today's power for the train to McWherever to play with some McNuggets, 550 & 552.  553 is down for a 92 day and will likely emerge with the white stripe if time allows, and another GP38-2 has been renumbered (#569) and repainted.  This leaves HLCX 343 to receive paint.

;D The 550 actually ran around in primer for quite a few months, painting definitely did take awhile with most of the power just patched out for the most part.  Most of the fleet is done now, just needing to do a complete job on the last former HLCX geep and the little white stripe which is fairly inexpensive all in all.

But yes the BASR does like to have a good corporate imagine  :moon:

I am indeed a big fan of the blue and how the tigers worked out; but nonetheless here's some new goodies for the yard coming by way of the Sunburry Southern, the impending breakup of Conrail has smaller and older deadline power being sold off and the BASR just picked up a pair of former PC SW1500s from the Altoona deadline.  This Saturday morning the roustabout ran out to Shamokin to grab them from the SBSR interchange with the 550 and C-64.

With increased traffic from the Sunburry Southern, as well as more traffic going to the C&P, these two units will help free up an MP15AC for road trains.
The yardmaster was out snapping a few shots of the power coming in, and here they are..

Cruising into Aberdeen, just past the yard and now approaching the shop, where they will run past on the switching lead and shove the hack and both units into the shop track where they will be looked at on Monday.

Approaching the switch past the shop.

Just clear of the lead switch and ready to shove in.

with 91 and 92 OOS from severe mechanical failures the McCentral picked up a pair of B23s to replace them for heavy cement service.  Of course they've already been painted in the new image...  Here 6388 leads a cut of hoppers eastbound with 6405 on the rear as there's no run-around at the industry. Bummer that the road's on the other side of the river.

Engine 1322 pulls a coal train up the grade towards Montrose. Later on in the week we see the same engine pulling a short local towards the same town. Mayburry Northern 1322 is one of five SD40-2s that were purchased by the Mayburry Northern for use in snow fighting service in the Boston area. It has since been downrated and exiled to the remote Montrose Division, an isolated section of line acquired when Conrail formed.

Paint doesn't pull trains......
Eastbound manifest to Shamokin has just conquered the stiff grade and is now coasting along the ridgeline. SBSR has leased two more CP RS18's while new power is acquired.

The manifest and two CP RS18's were left in Shamokin for the local, the two GP35's joined the other half of the SBSR power to haul 60 empties from PPG back to the mines near Sunbury.

Pretty cool guys with a K5 on their ride.

Monday's RS7 rolls through the sleepy town of Greensburg, just east of the interchange in Shamokin with the SBSR, slowing to switch the Maytag Distribution center in town.  Unfortunately for the locals, the gauge was realigned out of the middle of the street to cross over driveways on side, thus blocking driveways for the 10 minutes or so while the crew switches Maytag.  Knowing this, Grandpa Hayward in his wagon hears the bell from the sole MP15AC and floors it to beat the train across -

After picking up loads from the nearby strip mine, Mayburry 1322 creeps past the decrepit remains of the Glen Burn breaker, which is currently being scrapped.

Busy Tuesday on the BASR today - Light day otherwise, so other additional power could be spared for the first 70 car test train of coal from the Mayburry to the powerplant on the SBSR; only the first three units were online with the 343 in the lashup as oh sh*t power for the climb up to the interchange, but she wasn't needed.  Dark dismal day for sure.

Easing out of the Mayburry interchange..

Throttle wide open past the Aberdeen shop..

Screaming thru Greensburg at a whopping 6 mph with the throttle in the corner.

Monday's RS-59 also brought in a new toy from the BWED; the lunatic CMO over there wanted to re-engine and drop a cab on their slug as they're in the progress of phasing out the BW9s. (BW9 92 and 93 are already in storage on the BASR in Aberdeen) The slug was dragged from the train this morning and dropped on the shop track in front of the future SW1500 502.  Sister 501 was also dragged into the shop to begin the rebuild and a paint job.

Here's the slug on the shop track after the drill engine broke up the coal train lashup for tomorrow's trains.

Shop update: In the fastest rebuild, repaint, and weathering job of all time, SW1500 501 rolled out of the shop one day after being put in (  :facepalm1: ), and made her first trip on the main with the 553 which also just came out of a 92 day; after issues with one of the geeps arose, the 553 was needed and was quickly ushered out without the application of the white stripe.  There's always next time! With the 501 and 553 out, 552 went in after having some ground relay issues on Tuesday's coal train.

Here's the 501 pre-weathered and idling in front of the shop before the start of the day... this unit will be used almost exclusively as the Aberdeen Yard drill engine (eventually to be joined by the 502 when completed), as well as running west out to Shamokin to grab cars from the SBSR, and east to grab cars from the Mayburry.

Later in the day, Wednesday's RS6 with 58 cars heading east to the Mayburry interchange to drop off the outbound cars from earlier in the week with the 501 second out.

RS7s 903 and 907(ignore the dual 903 numbers. The real 907 skin is still in the paint booth) were hauling 15 loaded coal gons and a small work train from Montrose to the interchange with the BASR at Aberdeen when it stalled out on the Montrose grade and was forced to double the hill.

Here we see the first half of the train pulling through Laxamaxen on its way to the siding at Hawk Junction.

The first half tucked into the siding, the engines run light back to their train.

Finally, the second half of the train rumbles through the town on its way back to the rest of the train.

Caught the BASR a few days ago with the recently shopped 552 dragging the stored BWED BW9s to their temporary homes; one en route to the Mayburry and the other for the SBSR.

Havnt screenshotted in awhile so here we go.....
SBSR has received two SD38's which have been delivered in fresh paint. The units lack dynamics so they are assigned exclusively to helper and Sunbury area transfer service, here we see the duo returning from the CP interchange on the Awl St. connector
(http://hostthenpost.org/uploads/93b76781b080106ccbbe6ce2f046b6fd.jpg) (http://hostthenpost.org)
Horns blaring as the transfer heads up the 1 block stretch of streetrunning on 5th St.
(http://hostthenpost.org/uploads/0194ff1dc9877b18fda664274892c709.jpg) (http://hostthenpost.org)
Once the transfer reaches Sunbury Yard the power is cut off to assist a Shamokin bound coal train with a pair of geeps helping out the big ALCO's. Here the units are wide open as they near the formidable 2.7 % grades of Stonnington Hill. Tripped the shutter too soon...
(http://hostthenpost.org/uploads/0bda71bb16e063cda5359ecab161ef0b.jpg) (http://hostthenpost.org)
Pushing on the rear
(http://hostthenpost.org/uploads/71145fe68a9cc52d1c6f9d34cb884917.jpg) (http://hostthenpost.org)

Stonnington Hill conquered at 14 mph!

(http://hostthenpost.org/uploads/340c66dcf388004229dc230c3439059f.jpg) (http://hostthenpost.org)

once the grade levels out at the Plum Creek trestle the helpers will cut off on the fly and return to Sunbury.

With B-1 out to play in Aberdeen, 90 has had to work on its own. Showing its wear quite well, it's seen crawling out of Breadwood yard with the Seligman turn.

After switching out its empty boxcars for loads the Seligman turn makes its way further East to the Seligman Psychiatric Center with eight 3-bays of coal to power the compound.  Its a 10mph shove up a 1% grade for about a mile and a half before dumping the loads and coming back down, and there aren't any roads that are anywhere near the line, so photography is very limited.

Coming back West towards Breadwood:

Hahaha - and I agree a CF7 at least would be nice on one of these... we'll see what the BASR needs..  ;)

Early this morning a few buffs ran out to bag the RS58 as the crew rolls through Bridgeport, heading to drop off today's scrap to the CPRY, with the morning sun reflecting off the side of the crossing.

Slick stuff Alex.

Speaking of  , the RF58 crew rolls past the Black Horse at a snailpaced 15mph with the usual short Spring Grove train.  They're nearing the end of their day and are most certainly wishing they could be at the Irish pub knocking down some Yuengling themselves, while they watch the local nightlife heat up early on this Friday night.

Very cool, I have gone through the thread at least 10 times and love the concept you guys have going on. I thought you were all using the same DEM and sharing back and fourth to build one big route where you all interchange with each other. In multiplayer that would really be fun.

That's been talked about before - now that Alex's railroad isn't sprawled on top of mine, merging the routes together would definitely be doable.  But it's fun enough the way we do it where we shoot each other (or just me sending mine around) the spreadsheets that contain all customers, frequency of cars, coming from what railroad, going to what customer, etc.  My route is actually on the Slatington PA DEM and despite the town names is completely accurate as far as the prototype area in terms of location; Nikos' SBSR is as well iirc.

Small section of one of the pieces to the spreadsheet I mentioned:
(I still have yet to change the MBYN reporting marks yet again to whatever Alex is calling his railroad today)

The more I look at that red and yellow hood segment, the more I think I'm going to need to skin a whole unit in that scheme.

Looking good Adam, you finished that derelict RS1 fast!
Long overdue update, the paint shop has finally got a hold of one of the bandit GP35's for repainting and its seen here on its first run in new paint on the short Kratzerville branch which extends north from Shamokin Dam to Kratzerville. The paint shop had a hard time deciding how to apply the scheme to a high hood unit so the next one may come out of the shop looking a bit different.

Heading north through Kratzerville, ahead the train will switch the Kratzerville coal loadout and run around their train for the run back to Shamokin Dam yard, the line once continued north but now terminates shortly ahead.

Nothing much new to report.. just a few late afternoon shots of the RF57 rolling back into Aberdeen.  First passing by the shop, the HLCX 348 still has yet to be painted.

After nearly two months on the teardown track and then the shop track, the BWED slug was pushed to the end of the shop tail to make room for the 554 to be painted.  El Presidente of the BWED lost interest and the BASR is brokering the unit, but will be dragged to Gershow Recycling to be cut up if no bids are made.

The BLOW had the highest bid for the slug, and after sitting at the end of the shop track Aberdeen, the B1 is finally off to somewhere useful.  Stenciled for the BLOW, the slug was put 2nd out by today's (Monday) RS-7 crew to be interchanged to the SBSR, eventually making its way to the BLOW.  A handful of buffs were out today to get shots of the move under an overcast sky:

Westbound thru Fleetwood with the 552 back on point after a few weeks out of service.

Fall has definitely taken Pennsylvania by storm in the last few weeks.. the changing colors of trees and other foliage along the BASR ROWs has made for some nice photos as the railroad gears up for dealing with mother nature this winter.  The railroad also signed a contract with the Barlow to lease a former NS GP38-2 for three months, with the option of renewing for a fourth month, to alleviate the power hungry railroad after one of the GP38s experienced some generator issues, taking it out of service.  The new unit, BLOW 5212 was dropped off to the SBSR a week back and just made it to the Shamokin interchange this morning, the RF54 crew was called to run out to pick it & the other interchange cars up later this afternoon.

The RF54 crew shown here backing out of the shop lead to the main to make the run light to Shamokin..

The day crew left the unit on 2 Shop here since the west end yard/local crew (RF6) calls on first tomorrow morning, and will let them push it into the shop to be inspected and see how badly the SBSR broke it on the trip over..  :D

I like the weathering on that unit, nice job.
Thanks! It's the trailing unit on regular northbounds uphill through a tunnel, so it sees an unfair share of soot.

Yesterday's RF70 made the first interchange move between the BWED and BASR, bringing 47 cars to the Carbondale interchange and pulling 63 to return back to Aberdeen. They're shown here with SD45 570 on point cruising past Dover AFB just outside of Bridgeport, moments away from hopping onto the South Fork sub.

At 8:05 and under a starry sky, the RFX1 crew prepares their power for a trip down to the CPRY in Spring Grove to drop off the first 15 of a large group of new 2 bay hoppers for sand service. These will supplement the mixed former B&O, Monon, and CSX hoppers that the CPRY already rosters..

HS&A SD45s #2613 and #2610 sit on the shop tracks at Rockford yard across the river from Rockford, PA. #2613 still sports a solid red nose as her scare stripes and yellow banding have yet to be replaced after her short hood and cab was repaired from a grade crossing incident this summer.

Here is a closeup shot of the repaired nose.

And here we see the HS&A deadline with an ex NYSW RS1 and C&P's old RS27 #2404 sitting on the old turntable lead. #2404 was purchased along with slug 70T from the Cumberland and Potomic earlier this fall. The slug is now renumbered 26b and is paired up with RS7 #26 and spends its days running between Swedeland Quarry, the Swedeland Cement Company plant with limestone, and the loaded cement hoppers back to the Swedeland Yard. RS27 #2404 was purchased with the intent of hiring the BASR shops to perform another rebuilding job similar to the RS7s already on the roster, though that has yet to materialize due to financial matters. For now #2404 will sit with the RS1, which is a leftover from the RS7 rebuilding program with its future unknown.

A quick one.. the RFX1 crew was called yesterday morning to bring down another 15 hoppers for the CPRY as well as a string of cars pulled from the SBSR in Shamokin a few days earlier; here they are on 3 Trk in Spring Grove, with the recently reactivated-to-mainline-service and still patched 554 on point, about to cut the power and run back home.

just a few things been happening since the last update...

Plow is up and riding on an S12 frame. Ended up having to chop and rebuild the back of the engine to fit.

Some new ballast was poured in the yards and another shop track got added in Breadwood.  The B30 is the first official OLS unit in this cluster- it remains to be seen if neighboring railroads will follow suit.  Both B23s got washed up and 'winterized' with some cardboard over the radiator intakes.  All B-boats now have an added set of headlights in the nose and black painted underframes with silver AARs.  Not much else besides that

In preparation for the impending winter, the BASR pulled W-64 off the shop track and began to rebuild the car from a standard shoving platform to a new dorm and storage car for plow extras.  Re-classified as C-64, the hack has been reinsulated and retrofitted with an underframe generator to power a heater, small stove, and small refrigerator.  Also added were 4 bunks on the F side of the car, storage cabinets for overnight crew supplies, a new toilet/sink, and small kitchen counter space with cupboards above, as well as an AC unit for if the car was to be used in the warmer months for other duties. (Yes, it all fits)

Also in the works is a new snow plow that will round out the equipment used for the plow extra consist... pictures will come as the plow gets closer to completion...

Below is a picture of 64 being pulled from the shop track prior to its rebuild back in early October, and the second shows the completed car resting on the shop pad this morning (12/5).

The plow, temporarily marked BASR W999, has been completed by the BWED shop boys and is currently en-route to the BASR/BWED interchange at Carbondale.  With snow in the forecast for next week, an extra crew was called to run light and bring the plow back to Aberdeen where it'll be quickly painted and finalized for some work.

Pix will come when the plow is painted..... [big thanks to Ryan for doing the modelling work]

With two MP15AC's soon to be taken out of the regular available power pool for plow train duty, the Aberdeen shop crew has been hard at work at completing the 552's 184 day and swapping out a bad traction motor.  Here she is resting all the way in South Fork after trial run, followed by a shot of the extra crew and CMO also aboard rolling past a favorite lunch spot on the other side of the rails from Carbondale Yard [BWED interchange] a few hours later after the sky cleared up.

Tomorrow, [Sunday], the RFX1 crew will be called to run from Aberdeen to Carbondale to pick up a new BW9T locomotive, rebuilt in-house by the Breadwood for the SBSR from a former BWED BW9, as part of a 2 unit order. Additionally, the new snow plow made it to Aberdeen from Carbondale this past Friday night, with much of today spent on painting and prepping the plow for next week's supposed storm.  Should be ready to hit the main by Tuesday..

Got some new power outshopped after the plows came together- a pair of BW9Ts and a new slug.  The BW9Ts are essentially just BW9s with concrete pads placed underneath the engine bays, leaving room for electrical and air components.  The added weight gives them a little more pulling power than the regular units, which is especially helpful with the four-notch throttles.

The slug meanwhile, is chopped down from an S12- also filled with concrete and cement to be semi-permanently mated with 93 for some added pulling power- similar to B1 and 90 when they were still active on the roster.

Aaaand here's a class photo.

Love that slug... the body reminds me a little bit of something.  ;)

As planned, the RFX1 crew reported for duty in Aberdeen this morning and brought a few tie gons to Carbondale for some track work out that way, and met the BWED extra that brought the first BW9T for the SBSR to interchange.

Crossing Higbie St., rolling up to the interchange in Carbondale.  The BASR main is to the right, and these two lines meet a few yards west of here where they become the lead for the yard.

Within the confines of the yard, we have a moment to take a look at this badass piece of locomotive..

BASR road units hitched on, ready to head east..

Taken just a few minutes ago, the lashup came right into the shop area to be looked over by the shop boys and kept under watch overnight.  Tomorrow morning the RF7 crew will use the 552/554 for power, but will first run the BW9T up to Shamokin and hand it off to the SBSR, before coming back and working the yard.

There is just one customer in the C&P's home city of Bear Bottom, a scrapyard.  Here we see the yard job taking a brief pause.  Soon it will continue away from the frame with the empty gondolas just out of sight.  Then it will return with the day's loads, which will take tomorrow's train up to the BASR.  That track to the left is the recently re-installed station lead.  I wonder what the plans are?

(The gons are really there, trust me.  Would I ever lie to you?)

Seems the shop guys finally got enough motivation (read: large Christmas bonuses) to get former BLOW S2 32 out of the shop and running for the first time in a decade.  At least I think it had said Barlow Railroad.  Once some more motive power shows up we'll have to send her to a paint booth somewhere, but what's the rush, eh?

After months of delay much needed road power arrives on the SBSR. These units were bought by SBSR's holding company back in the late 1980's and have been in lease service since then venturing from British Columbia to Mexico. The first three to arrive are being broken in on a loaded coal train to Shamokin, as time allows they will be cycled through the shop for overhaul and repaint.

The snow has not been kind to power up here, that's for sure.. a few days ago, with the snowstorm that just dumped on the Northeast yesterday in the forecast, the roustabout crew  grabbed the new snow equipment from the storage yard/boneyard in Aberdeen to prepare for keeping the line to the BWED open.  Here we see a quick grab shot from Saturday of a ragged 550 rolling past the recently shopped C-64 with the W-95 (snowplow) in tow.  The 550 has fared particularly poorly in appearance because it is the sole unit retrofitted with a small operating console for the headlight and other equipment equipped on the W-95, and after being stationed in Carbondale off and on in snow service for the last few months, the paint job has suffered quite a bit..

Nothing too major to report outside of a shop update. With the lease on the 5212 (HH GP38) running out by the end of the month, the shop crew has dragged the last unowned HLCX leaser from the boneyard and begun to bring it back to life. The 348 has been down and out for a little over 6 months due to a blown generator, and has been waiting for new trucks as well. Still no plans to purchase the unit from HLCX (like two other sisters which were bought out since 348 died), but time will tell.

I'm not sure what makes this thread better, the screenies, the story line, or the routes themselves. Either way I continue to be impressed. I see there is a pallet of new mufflers sitting there. Our local short line, honestly just threw a 55 gallon drum on one of their geep 38s when the muffler rotted out.  My friends and I all live along different regions of the line and we all jab at each other when that unit is working in someone's division.

Or could it be that it is going to be used in an experiment in fuel economy?

Lt. Comd. Dodge: Give me all you got, Howard!

Lt,. Howard, Chief Engineer: Aye, sir! This is what I live for, DBF!

[pulls out a bottle of whiskey, takes a swig, and pours the rest into the fuel tank]

Stepanek: What are you doing?

Lt,. Howard, Chief Engineer: Whiskey, thins down the mix. Gives us another 50 RPM's!

Been a little quiet lately in here, but we've all been plugging away.. Just one shot for now but more will certainly follow. O0

At long last the snow has melted and it has warmed up a bit in Penna.... Here is this morning's RF62 roaring across the Wissahickon River with the throttle in the corner and a mixed bag brace of 34 cars for the South Penn, the interchange in Fort Washington only a few miles away. Local legislation has been working with the railroads in the area to test the feasibility of ethanol trains, which after originating on the BLOW will be routed via the SBSR & BASR, ultimately getting handed off to Kevin and the South Penn. Each railroad will provide some power into a small pool for this service, which will most certainly result in some nice colorful lashups of foreign power.

A quick shot of Friday's short RF62 rolling through a suburban neighborhood in St. James, slowing down to line the iron into South Fork yard.  The crew has just pulled this mixed bag from the SPRY a few miles down the line in Fort Washington, and will be bound for the Breadwood to swap cars there as well.  The 550 has just gotten a nice bath and a shiny RS5T that one of the engineers owns has temporarily replaced her K5LA, which is certainly getting a workout on this dreary day as the hogger makes noise for each of the successive crossings in town.

Thanks for the kind words gents, makes it all that more fun to do the work.  Big thanks to George & Andre too for pointing me towards the trees I used in this scene.

This morning's 62 had another typical day of work, shown here with the same power out of South Fork (gets cycled out every two weeks for refueling).  Sunday night's RF70 will bring out a new set of units, leave them in South Fork, then grab the 550 and 568 and return them to Aberdeen for fueling & servicing. Here's the 62 shown blasting out of the tunnel I forgot the name of, bound for SF yard - Engr forgot to knock off his markers for the trip back.

I'll give dort a break from posting since i actually did some work on the route. LPC-1 heads west for Penns Creek on the Lewistown sub. Currently the line is embargoed past Penns Creek due to washouts which led CP to shut down the former DLW route and sell it to the state of PA.
The railroad is working to reopen the line but it may be awhile before trains roll all the way to Lewistown again.

Been working here and there on the Breadwood whenever I can lately. Started a new route on a new DEM that's actually in Pennsylvania! (what a concept!)

Still working out which trees to use- Speed Trees give me the density I need without hogging down resources, but paper trees tend to look better at a distance. A handful of tunnels on the new route, and lately I've been setting up Greenvale yard. Modeled a turntable for it about a week ago and I'm almost finished revamping the shop area. In all it's a hundred mile run from Greenvale out to BASR interchange at Carbondale. Also I picked up a dozen SOU B23s.

Today brought a rare daytime move of the RF70 which typically runs under the stars between Aberdeen and South Fork, shown here with the class SD38 and her immediate sister 2nd out.  The throttle has been in the corner since leaving Aberdeen as the majority of the westbound run is uphill, with the grade varying between as little as 0.2% and as steep as 2.1%; with 54 cars in tow, the 4000hp on point is certainly getting a workout.

Fall has taken Pennsylvania by storm, the regular power for the RF62 is shown here in South Fork as the crew reports for duty on a drizzling and cool morning.  Also shown on the old House Track is the BASR's new snowplow, rebuilt from a cut down S12, along with refurbished hack C-64 which has been retrofitted with new bunks, a kitchen, toilet, and shower to allow snow crews a few days of time out on the road.

They were P72s in the PT72C class made by Ryan for me some time ago - only a few of us had access as they were still a few objectives away from completion (needed proper trucks as well).  They'll be available in a pack that will include 72A's, B's, C's, and the PP72 parlors in the future.

Cheers

From what I can tell some of it lives on, to see it you'll have to go to the Auran forum and look.  I believe a lot of these projects (or variations of them) are seen on the Jointed Rail page there.
