What are these for?
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:38:14 AM »
While driving by UP's Dolores yard today in Carson, CA I saw a string of flats sitting in the yard.  It looked like the flats were being hauled as a unit train.  All of the flats had the same load rigging that appeared to be made for a specific load.  My question is what could that load be?
(Sorry for the low quality pictures. All I had to take the pictures was my iPod)

Airplane bodies? Maybe large drain/sewer pipes?

I'm thinking they might be wind generator tower section haulers.  If you look carefully you'll notice that the curvature of the cradles are not consistent from end to end on each rail car.  Also that's about the radius of the tower sections for the bigger windmills.  I could also be wrong again. :facepalm1:

Thanks for the input guys.  I think any of the loads mentioned above could be likely possibilities.  This yard is located right next door to both Long Beach and Los Angeles Harbors so there are many possibilities.

Well with all the wind mill action in the central California area such as Altamont pass and from what I under stand Shiloh Wind Farm 3 near Rio vista, they are coming from over sea.  Or maybe that portal Bill keeps telling me about.  :bonk:

I happened to drive by the yard yesterday and the flats had loads on them.  Here's what was loaded on them.

Those are definitely wind generator tower sections.

Those are pretty neat. I have seen a lot of the wind power generator turbine blades being hauled along the highway through Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. But I haven't seen something like this. Good catch!

Was back at Dolores yesterday and there was another string of flats with more turbine parts loaded on them.
